Silicon carbide heat exchangers

Since more than 10 years GAB Neumann offers a complete range of SiC heat exchangers for the most corrosive and oxidizing applications in the pharmaceutical and the chemical industries. Our product portfolio includes silicon carbide plate, block, as well as shell and tube heat exchangers. These pieces of equipment can be used as cooler, heaters, interchangers, absorbers, condensers, or evaporators.

Plate heat exchangers

Silicon carbide plate heat exchangers offer the most compact and efficient design. SiC plate heat exchangers can be used as cooler and heaters.

Block heat exchangers

Silicon carbide block heat exchangers offer the most versatile design. SiC block heat exchangers can be used as cooler, heaters, evaporators, condensers and absorbers.

Shell and tube heat exchangers

Silicon carbide shell and tube heat exchangers offer a versatile and modular design. SiC shell and tube heat exchangers are mostly used for condensation and cooling applications. They can afford corrosive and oxidizing fluids both on process and service sides.

Materials

  • CORROSIC® pressureless sintered silicon carbide (SiC)
  • Tube sheets: 4 mm thick PFA lined carbon steel
  • Headers: silicon carbide (SiC), glass lined steel, or PTFE lined steel
  • Shell, pressure plates and flanges: carbon steel or stainless steel
  • Tie rods, nuts, bolts, washers, springs: stainless steel

Key features

  • Design pressure: -1 barg (full vacuum) to +16 barg (232 psig)
  • Design temperature: -60 to +230°C (-76 to 446°F)
  • Heat transfer area: up to 42 m2 (up to 452 ft2)
  • Design: according to European PED, ASME code, Chinese Pressure Vessel code and other national pressure vessel codes on request

Key Benefits:

  • Outstanding corrosion resistance on one side or on both sides
  • Excellent heat transfer performance thanks to adjustable cross sections on both sides
  • High operational safety
  • Short lead time
  • Long lifetime

Main applications:

  • Cooling, condensation, heating, evaporation, sublimation, crystallization and absorption of ultra-corrosive and/or oxidizing chemicals
  • Heat transfer between two ultra-corrosive and/or oxidizing chemicals
  • Heating or cooling of ultra-pure chemicals for the electronic industry
  • Heat recovery

Heat exchangers

A heat exchanger is a device which transfers heat from one medium to another without direct contact between fluids. Heat is transferred by conduction through the exchanger materials which separate the mediums being used. The most common types of heat exchangers in the industry are plate and frame heat exchangers as well as shell and tube heat exchangers. The thermal performance of heat exchangers can vary significantly. It is therefore essential to select the type of heat exchanger that is the most adapted to the specific application. There are a number of considerations including flow rate, pressure drop, design pressure and temperature, materials compatibility, fouling, purity, and many more that should be taken in account.

GAB Neumann’s silicon carbide heat exchangers

GAB Neumann’s silicon carbide heat exchangers are designed to cool down, condense, heat up, evaporate, sublime, crystallize, or absorb ultra-corrosive and oxidizing chemicals. Safety, reliability, and performance on the long-term are our primary considerations when we size, design and assemble our SiC heat exchangers.

Whether we talk about our plate, block, or shell and tube silicon carbide heat exchangers, our extended and highly customizable heat exchangers portfolio enables us to provide particularly adapted solutions to heat transfers in ultra-corrosive and oxidizing applications. Our SiC heat exchangers’ designs are modular to best fit with individual process specifications. The number and size of plate, block, or tubes as well as the number of passes both on process and service sides can be adapted to best meet the velocities, pressure drops, and heat transfer requirements.

Our silicon carbide plate heat exchangers offer the most compact and efficient design. Our SiC plate heat exchangers can be used as cooler and heaters. This is the most efficient type of SiC heat exchanger.

Our silicon carbide block heat exchangers are extremely versatile. Our SiC block heat exchangers can be used as condenser, coolers, heaters, absorbers or evaporators. With the monolithic blocks and their limited number of gaskets, they are highly suitable for steam heated applications. They can be fitted with optional features such as sight glasses or demountable headers to better fit the process requirements.

Our silicon carbide shell and tube heat exchangers are mostly used for condensation and cooling applications. Our SiC shell and tube can afford corrosive and oxidizing fluids both on process and service sides. The headers and the shell can be manufactured in glass lined steel, PTFE lined steel, or glass as well as in carbon or stainless steel on a non-corrosive side.
