Fine chemicals are complex, single, pure chemical substances, produced in limited quantities in multipurpose plants by multistep batch chemical processes. The class of fine chemicals is subdivided either on the basis of the added value (building blocks, advanced intermediates or active pharmaceutical ingredients), or the type of business transaction, namely standard or exclusive products.
The pharmaceutical industry is by far the largest customer of fine chemicals, globally accounting for about two-thirds of demand. Related life science areas (agrochemicals and animal health) account for more than half of the remainder, while there is also a broad range of other applications such as catalysts, dyestuffs, electronic chemicals, flavors, food additives, etc…
Manufacturing process
Fine chemicals are produced in limited volumes (< 1000 tons/year) and at relatively high prices (> $10/kg) according to exacting specifications, mainly by traditional organic synthesis in multipurpose chemical plants. The units include usually an agitated reactor and a condenser. Some units also include a post condenser and a liquid sub-cooler. The reactor might be jacketed to allow heating or cooling.

Our annular groove graphite heat exchangers, graphite block heat exchangers, graphite heaters, graphite coolers as well as our silicon carbide condensers and sub-coolers have performed since numerous decades in this field.
Our graphite heat exchangers are good manufacturing practices (GMP) compliant, totally drainable and gasket free. Our manufacturing process prevents the release of black particles. Headers can be removed for inspection. Cleaning in place spray balls, sight glasses, and gas / condensate separation chambers can be offered on request. Our silicon carbide offers a high level of purity and can be fitted with a leak detection system on request.
